“Monday, Monday, so good to me
Monday mornin´, it was all I hoped it would be”
-The Mamas and The Papas
Mondays used to be my least favorite day of the week. Now it’s my favorite. Why the 180? I have to admit, I wasn’t exactly expecting my attitude towards the week-starter to change, ever. Aren’t we as people SUPPOSED to hate Mondays? I feel like I’m doing a disservice to civilization in a way, but I can’t help it. I LOVE Mondays now, and here’s why.
I used to work in a dental office. I was rushing out the door (usually late) by 7 am Monday-Thursday to commute an hour each way to work 8-5/6 and then drive an hour home. I started doing this when my oldest was 4. I worked throughout my pregnancy with my son and continued on with this schedule for 8 years. When we first started homeschooling, I kept working for another year, until finally all of the stars aligned and I was able to stay home full time. I had been working full time since my oldest was a year old. It was definitely a big adjustment for all of us, but one we all needed. I was running on fumes (aka coffee), and felt like I was failing at everything- Marriage, Parenting, Homeschooling and my job. Every week was flying right by me and the three short days I had uninterrupted with my family were brutally cut short every week on Monday. Mondays meant it would be another 96 hours before I got to breathe. Mondays meant the end of my time with them. Mondays meant 5 am alarm clocks and 8 pm dinners for the next four days. Mondays meant Stressed Mommy is back, instead of Relaxed Mommy. Mondays sucked. It was not a very fun time for any of us.
When we finally made the leap for me to stay home, it was like I got a refresher on my life. It was exactly what we all needed. My kids are happier having me home full time. I get to see the progress they make every day, support and encourage them, and just enjoy them.
Now, Mondays no longer mean the end of my time with them, but the start of a brand new week full of adventures and quality time. Mondays mean the public school kids are back in school, freeing up the pool and the library and the park! Mondays no longer mean 5 am alarm clocks and 8 pm dinners. Mondays mean the kids sleep until they’re fully rested, instead of having to wake up before I left for work to be ready for the day. Mondays mean I can plan our week in peace, knowing that I have the flexibility of managing our schedules to our liking or needs. Mondays mean Stressed Mommy rarely makes an appearance anymore. I am human, so she does make occasional cameos. Mondays mean finishing homeschool by 10 AM and getting to play the rest of the day. Mondays are now my favorite.
What are your thoughts on Mondays? Do you have a favorite day of the week? Let me know! I hope you’re all having a fabulous Monday and week!
